Memories of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia

From The CapeBretoner

What’s in a name? A story if you’re from Cape Breton. Once given- forever branded, the nickname on the Island went with you to the grave. Sometimes descriptive, sometimes based upon an incident, sometimes accurate and sometimes bordering upon the cruel.
I remember driving through New Waterford with a buddy once and seeing a man with a very crooked spine. His whole upper torso was leaning heavily to the left. I asked my buddy who he was and the answer I got back was, “ Oh, that’s Ten-To-Seven!”
Albert MacDonald from New Waterford gave us an exhaustive list of nicknames from New Waterford years ago. I thought I might reprint them here to see if anyone remembers these people and perhaps the stories behind the names. Or perhaps nicknames from your home village or town.

Angus “Blue” was a much-loved local politician in Glace Bay. Heparlayed his job as a miner and his volunteer work with the CanadianLegion and Little League Baseball into a lifetime position on TownCouncil.
Like so many of his peers, Angus “Blue” left school at an early ageto help support his family. His formal education probably ended withGrade Six. Angus “Blue” was known for his propensity to mangle theEnglish language. He could, on occasion, make Mrs. Malaprop soundlike an Oxford don.
Addressing voters, he referred to them as “my dear constitionaries”.If elected, he promised he would “do something about the ‘LIGHTNING’system on South Street”.
During a Town Council meeting he advised those present he haddifficulty pronouncing Clerk Enso Antonello’s name and thereafterwould refer to him as “the Dago”. No offence was taken by Enso orby “Blue’s” fellow Councillors.
Angus “Blue” clashed once with Prime Minister Mike Pearson who wasat a Legion Atlantic Command convention soft-selling hisgovernment’s approach to bilingualism and biculturalism.
“Listen, Bye”, he told the PM, “if English was good enough for JesusChrist, it’s good enough for us guys down here.” Then, for goodmeasure, he threw in a few profane broadsides.
Ever the diplomat, ever conciliatory, Mike Pearson replied: “Wearen’t trying to legislate language for anyone. It doesn’t matter awhit what language Canadians speak – English, French or the languageof the previous speaker.” Angus “Blue” was smart enough to quit whenhe was behind.
The morning paper the next day carried a photo of Angus “Blue”wearing his blue Blazer and beret, both carrying Legion crests -with his arm around Mike Pearson’s shoulder.
The Hot Stove League that gathered on fine evenings on Senator’sCorner in Glace Bay under the chairmanship of “Big Cy” MacDonald wasalways good for the latest Angus “Blue” miscue – like the night hewent to Vince MacGillivray’s Funeral Parlour wearing his brandnew “double-chested suit and Stilson hat” from Hughie MacIntyre’shaberdashery.
Angus “Blue” didn’t live to experience “NIAGARA”, the new wonderdrug for erectile difficulty. Nor did he ever indulge himself in oneof those new fangled JU-JITSU bathtubs with water jets.
“Big Cy” and Angus “Blue” were in common agreement on one thing.
“Everybody thinks we are backward down here in Cape Breton. Did youknow that last year 10,000 Upper Canadian and American touristsdrove down here to see the SEVEN MILE BRIDGE?”
The Seven Mile Bridge is about 75 feet across – includingapproaches – and spans a narrow stream at Howie Centre. It is sevenmiles from Sydney.
“Now, who’s backward?”

Memories of North Sydney, Cape Breton

Shown are the members of the 1958 Sydney Mines Ramblers. The team will be inducted into the Northside Sports Hall of Fame on Oct. 19. In front from the left, are Ken Jardine, Bryan Cullen, Jim Higgins, Lou Campbell, Leo Doyle, Bill Merritt and Bob Burchell. In back, are Irving Campbell, Gerald Buffett, Frank Lovell, Lewis Matheson, Bob Ferguson, Russ Gordon, Doe MacLellan, Jack MacNeil and Mooney Clark, coach. Missing from the photo are Al MacNeil, Edgar Hillman and Gordie Steweart

NORTH SYDNEY — The Northside Sports Hall of Fame will welcome five new additions during an induction ceremony Oct. 19 at Emera Centre Northside.

The new inductees are Frank (Flash) Hollett and Bill MacLeod as athletes, and builders Tommy Jaques and Elmer (Mooney) Clark.
The 1958 Sydney Mines Ramblers baseball team will also enter the hall of fame in the team category.
Hollett participated in many sports during his youth including a lacrosse, where he caught the eye of Conn Smythe, the owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Smythe invited Hollett to the Leafs training camp which led to a stint with Syracuse of the International American Hockey League during the 1933-34 season.
The following year he played four games with Toronto to begin his National Hockey League career that included time with the Ottawa Senators, the Boston Bruins and the New York Rangers.
Because of his swift skating, Hollett was given the nickname ‘Flash, and the speedy winger saw a lot of time on the power play throughout his career.
He played on two Stanley Cup wining teams as a member of the Bruins in 1939 and 1941. He scored 19 goals during the 1941-42 and 1942-43 season and 20 goals in 1944-45.
In 1945 he was traded to the Rangers, but he had promised his wife Florence he would retire and kept his word despite the fact the Rangers general manager had offered him a huge bonus to play the 1946-47 season.
MacLeod began his hockey career outside on ponds and rinks around the Northside until the North Sydney Forum opened in 1947 and he started playing in a juvenile hockey league for the Gannon Road Hawks.
He led the league in scoring and his team went on to lose to Sydney Academy in the Cape Breton finals.
In 1948 he began the first of his two seasons at Dalhousie University as a forward the first year and defenceman in the second.
His career highlights also include a role with the 1967 Sydney Mines Ten Pennies team that captured the Maritime Title. They were also one of the teams to play the first ever Sunday game at the North Sydney Forum.
And in 1971 he was captain of the Northside Vics that met the Amherst Ramblers in the Nova Scotia play downs.
As a builder Jaques was known for many years as Mr. Baseball in Sydney Mines even though he focused his efforts on organizing, leaving playing and coaching to others.
His reputation grew in the mid-40s at a time when baseball in Sydney Mines saw imports playing and locals only watching.
Back then local players competed for teams in their neighbourhoods known as Bogrow,  Cranberry, Knob Hill and Sutherlands Corner because they were not allowed to play at Brown Street Park.
Jaques knew there were several great ball players in each community, so he put those players on one team to compete in the Cape Breton Junior League.
This team toured the Maritimes for exhibition play at very list cost because Jaques covered the expenses.
His efforts later led to a Cape Breton Junior title for the team in 1949.
Senior titles and several provincial titles followed.
Clark also enters the hall in the builders category for his interests in multiple sports, including boxing, which he began at an early age with the North Sydney Sea Cadet Corps.
In the early 1940s he won the Golden Gloves featherweight division title and continued to box at St. Mary’s Hall and the Glace Bay Miners Forum.
With the help of Jaques he started to play and coach baseball and senior teams he coached in Sydney Mines won four Cape Breton titles as well as provincial banners in 1958 and 1960.
He was connected to hockey teams on the Northside as a coach and trainer, as well. And in his later years enjoyed softball, skating and blowing.
The 1958 Ramblers baseball team earns induction this year to honour their storied run at the Maritime Baseball Championship against the Woodstock Elks.
That team also captured the Cape Breton title, defeating the Sydney Steel and then the New Waterford Giants in their march to the title.
In Nova Scotia play downs they downed the heavily favoured Londonderry Ironclads before facing Woodstock for the Maritime title.
In that historic series they face a Woodstock team considered a step higher than senior ball because they had four imports from the United States.
As a result they took the best-of-three series with a 6-4 victory in Game 3.
The five inductees will be honoured at the third annual Northside Sports Hall of Fame dinner and awards ceremonies in the Emera Centre Northside, Oct. 19.
Tickets for the ceremony are now on sale. Contact Cynthia Astephen at 577-7823, Mary Lou Andrea at 577-4939 or any board member of the Northside Sports Hall of Fame.
